Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day. Who'd a thunk it?

Just as I was starting to feel bad for the little rodents - with not being appreciated and all - I find out they have an entire day designated specifically for them. Who started Squirrel Appreciation Day? As it turns out, Christy Hargrove of WNC-Rehab takes credit for founding this special day.

I am the founder of Squirrel Appreciation Day, which was started in 2001. It falls on January 21st, and while there are no official events scheduled, you can help celebrate by putting out extra food for the squirrels.

Extra food? Hey, it's a start. Personally, I believe we should host parties and whatnot. Just don't invite this guy

So, in honor of these furry rascals, check out the Top 5 Web Squirrels of all time... brought to you by urlesque.com.

Majestic Landscape

I know the mountains are just mountains... and these photos aren't anything spectacular. But for the first time since I can remember, I was totally and completely in awe of the magnificent mountainous landscape. There's something about the Appalachians that allow you to forget about your troubles, if only for a moment.

A thing of beauty [image]

Our maple tree decided to explode with color this year. I'm guessing it's because of the unseasonably cool weather we've had. Alas... I'm no dendrologist. Nonetheless, it's a thing of beauty.

USC Horseshoe [image]

It's one of the most beautiful days we've had in a while. Being on the horseshoe makes it that much better.

Update: For my readers that aren't familiar with the horseshoe... the horseshoe is on the University of South Carolina - Columbia campus, and sits between Sumter, Pendleton, Pickens and Greene streets in Downtown Columbia. It is the site of the university's original campus founded in 1801 -- and features a long brick-paved walkway that forms the shape of a horseshoe. (The opening of the horseshoe faces Sumter St.) Within the center of the horseshoe is green space, with lush green grass and large old shady oaks. On any given day hundreds of students use the open space for relaxation, an afternoon game of frisbee, or studying. The outer perimeter of the horseshoe is lined with the first buildings ever erected on the university campus. The original college buildings are still in use today and house many university offices, a campus museum, library, chapel, and the president's house.

Online Package Tracking [comic]

I've been waiting for the arrival of my latest online purchase for quite a few days now. This sums it up perfectly.

Fireplace in a can [design]

We like to put everything else in a can, so why not fire? That must be what designer Camillo Vanacore was thinking when he dreamed up this portable, capsule fireplace.

The concept involves some sort of magical ceramic from outer space that starts out opaque, but becomes transparent when exposed to the heat of a flame. The fireplace also seems like it would be small enough to fit in one hand. I wouldn't expect to go to the grocery store anytime soon to pick up a six-pack of fire—but it is an interesting design at least. [Six Different Ways via Apartment Therapy via DVICE]

I'm not sure how this would work, or even how practical it would be. I'm quite certain the capsule would be, um, warm to the touch. Yet, the idea is fascinating.
